Producing III – YouTube

Research into the channels I follow as inspiration for my online component & sample content. I wouldn’t call myself a devoted YouTube watcher, I get notifications if the few people I subscribe to upload, but it isn’t something I use daily.

Shane Dawson:

  1. Began posting in 2008, comedy skits and video diaries.

  2. He is a comedic actor, author, singer, songwriter, podcaster and film director.

  3. Huge following (23.2M subscribers)

  4. Lots of famous friends eg Jeffree Star, Trisha Paytas, Tana Mongeau, Jake Paul who he has collaborated with.

  5. Marketed his Conspiracy makeup (sold 1M in just 30 minutes) with a series with Jeffree Star which was inside exclusive access, personal and raw insights (26M views on the first video in the series)

  6. Conspiracy theory videos – 2018 series has 44M views (one of the top global videos that year)

  7. He is very open about his mental health struggles (Depression, Body Dysmorphic Disorder)

  8. Longer form videos.

  9. In old content, used a lot of ‘clickbait’ titles used for shock value/something outrageous sounding so people are more likely to click on it, e.g “WE ADOPTED A BABY!” where they didn’t, they used a baby agent to look after one for the day.

Cody Ko:

  1. Began his comedic career on Vine.

  2. 4.3M subscribers.

  3. He also is part of a “comedy rap” duo ‘Tiny Meat Gang’ with Noel Miller who he often collaborates with on podcasts too.

  4. “Roasts” other YouTube videos, Instagrams, TikToks.

  5. Shorter form videos.

Architectural Digest:

  1. Originated in 1920 as a monthly magazine, now accessible online too.

  2. 2.73M subscribers.

  3. America’s most expensive homes.

  4. Celebrities homes, tours with them ‘open door’ videos.

  5. Exclusive access, their ‘about’ states the channel “provides exclusive access to the world’s most beautiful homes and the fascinating people who live in them, bringing its audience a wealth of information on architecture and interior design, art and antiques, travel destinations, and extraordinary product.”

Keeyuh:

  1. Sims player.

  2. 232K subscribers.

  3. Commentary of her playing, funny to see hear her reactions to some of the weird things that happen in the game.

  4. Ideas for custom content, interesting home designs etc.

  5. Easy to watch, relatable as a sims player.

  6. Shorter form videos, too much of it may become boring?

Elizabeth Zaks:

  1. Fitness/workout/healthy eating videos.

  2. 297K subscribers.

  3. Honest reviews of clothing/gym wear.

  4. A few personal videos amongst workouts.

  5. Informative and motivational.
